More protection for turtles

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department has written to the Hong Kong Boating Industry Association concerning the extension of restricted access to Sham Wan on Lamma Island for the Conservation of Green Turtles:

‘The sandy beach at Sham Wan, Lamma Island, is the only regular nesting site of Green Turtles in Hong Kong. To strengthen the protection of the Green Turtle, with effect from 1 April 2021, the Restricted Area will be expanded from the adjacent waters in the inlet of the sea, and the restricted period will be extended from five months to seven months (1 April to 31 October) every year.

Unauthorised entry is subject to a maximum fine of HK$50,000.

You are reminded to observe the following:

* do not enter Sham Wan Restricted Area on Lamma Island (see map) from 1 April to 31 October
* report sightings of sea turtles to AFCD by calling 1823
* do not dispose of garbage, fishing line, net and hooks into the sea
